Robert Gagne's book, The Conditions of Learning (1965) identified the optimal environment for learning. He described nine specific events that correlate to this learning environment in the classroom. Notice the parallels between Gagne's nine events and the list of steps above.

Presenting the content
Providing learning guidance
Eliciting performance ("practice")
Providing feedback
Assessing performance
Enhancing retention and transfer
